Autistic boy found after several days in the woods

Eight-year-old Robert Wood Jr., was found Friday, five days after he vanished during a family hike in a Virginia park.NEW: An ER doctor says it is "amazing" the boy survived so long on his ownThe 8-year-old wandered away from his family while on a hike6,000 volunteers and 300 rescuers searched for himHe was spotted in a creek bed at a quarry, a sheriff's lieutenant says
(CNN) -- An 8-year-old autistic boy who went missing from a central Virginia park five days ago was discovered alive Friday at a nearby quarry, authorities said.
"Robert is a very strong and determined little boy," Robert Wood Sr. said in a statement released hours after his son was found. "We never gave up hope that he would return home safe."
A citizen involved in a large-scale search spotted Robert Jr. about 2 p.m. Friday in a creek bed just off a roadway at a Martin Marietta quarry, said Hanover County Sheriff's Lt. Col. David Hines.
Found curled in a fetal position, the boy was "in serious but good shape," Hines added. "Whenever a child is missing, everyone steps up. And that's what happened today."
Robert was taken by helicopter to the Children's Hospital of Richmond, where he was reunited with his family about 3 p.m.
Dr. Christopher Woleben told CNN late Friday that the boy -- who cannot speak, due to his autism -- was "awake, alert (and) surprisingly interactive" when he got to the emergency room.
"He was excited to see his mother, smiling every time he saw her," Woleben said. "He did have some signs and symptoms consistent with cold exposure, and we did a pretty thorough medical investigation."
The boy wandered away Sunday while on a hike with his father, father's girlfriend and his younger brother at the 80-acre North Anna Battlefield Park, according to CNN affiliate WTVR. The park is in Doswell, about 45 miles north of Petersburg and 80 miles south of Washington.
In subsequent days, approximately 6,000 volunteers had joined roughly 300 rescuers looking for young Robert in and around the Civil War battlefield. The boy was found between 3/4 of a mile and one mile from where he was last seen, according to Hines.
The lieutenant colonel said authorities had to turn volunteers away because of the strong desire to help, applauding their service.
So, too, did Robert Wood Sr. He thanked those who had helped, and offered thoughts and prayers, and assisted in other ways.
"The support we have received is overwhelming," the father said.
Barbara Locker, the boy's mother, said in a statement Friday that her child was "here and safe" and "a strong little fella."
Woleben, the emergency room physician, called it remarkable that Robert -- given his age, diagnosis, as well as the conditions outside -- appeared so positive and alert after his discovery.
"It is an amazing story that he was able to survive that amount of time on his own," the doctor said.

Chimp nabbed after getting out of cage

Chimpanzee briefly got out of her enclosure at Dallas ZooOfficials said she did not come in contact with the publicThey are investigating how she may have gotten loose
(CNN) -- Dallas authorities responded to a hairy situation at the city zoo Tuesday when a chimpanzee escaped its cage.
Koko, a 25-year-old chimp born and raised in the Dallas Zoo, wandered out of her cage into the main chimpanzee house, which is confined, officials said.
A "code red" was called at 10:15 a.m. CT. Veterinarians and police rushed to the scene.
Koko was shot with a tranquilizer dart and taken back to her quarters, where she was examined, said Lynn Kramer, deputy director at the zoo.
"Koko is groggy but doing fine," said Kramer. "Our staff was never in any danger and the public was never in contact with her. She never left the chimp house."
The zoo has launched an investigation into how Koko got loose -- whether it was due to human error or a defective cage door, Kramer said. The situation was resolved within 45 minutes, he said.
This isn't the first time an animal has tried to escape. Last year, CNN affiliate WFAA reported a 380-pound gorilla escaped its cage at the Dallas Zoo. That incident also wrapped up safely and within an hour.
In 2004, a male gorilla escaped his enclosure and attacked three people. He was shot and killed, WFAA said.

Tevez hit with massive fine after bust-up

Carlos Tevez has been left on the sidelines after a bust-up with manager Roberto ManciniCarlos Tevez fined four weeks wages by Manchester CityTevez fined for refusing to play in Champions League match against Bayern Munich Tevez has not played since the row with manager Roberto ManciniHe has said he would appeal the decision if the club found against him
(CNN) -- Manchester City star Carlos Tevez has been hit by a massive fine following his alleged refusal to play in their Champions League match against Bayern Munich last month.
A statement by the English Premier League leaders Tuesday night said the Argentina international striker would be docked four weeks wages.
Tevez was widely reported to be earning $400,000 per week, adding up to a total loss of wages of $1.6 million.
He has also been given a two-week suspension, but this was deemed to have already been served.
Tevez has not played for City since the September 27 bust-up in the Allianz Arena with manager Roberto Mancini.
Following a detailed investigation and associated hearing, a disciplinary panel has upheld a verdict of misconduct
Manchester Ciy club statement
The Italian was left fuming after he claimed Tevez would not come on as a second half substitute in the 2-0 defeat to the German giants.
Tevez insisted the incident was a misunderstanding, claiming he refused to warm-up because he had already done so.
The stand-off between the two men has seen Tevez left to train alone and disciplinary proceedings instituted by the club.
These have resulted in Tuesday's punishments as City found Tevez had breached five regulations, including "an obligation to participate in any matches in which the player is selected to play for the club when directed by a club official.
"Following a detailed investigation and associated hearing, a disciplinary panel has upheld the charge of misconduct," City said on their official club website.
"As a result Carlos Tevez has been fined four weeks' wages and has been suspended for a period of two weeks.
"He has received a written warning as to his future conduct."
Tevez has 14 days to decide whether to lodge an appeal to the club's board of directors and has previously said he would do so.
He could also take his case to the English Premier League.
The Argentine striker said in the summer he wanted a move away from Eastlands, but returned for the start of the season.
He may now get his wish in the January transfer window as the success of Mario Balotelli and Sergio Aguero has left him a marginalized figure at City, while Mancini said on the night of the Bayern incident that Tevez was "finished" with the club.

Relief, joy at Fort Bliss after announcement of Iraq withdrawal

Fort Bliss is home to the Army's 1st Armored Division and has 3,500 personnel in IraqThey'll all be coming home within weeks after Obama announced a troop withdrawal A military spouse says "it was very emotional" when she and others heard the newsShe and others are happy, while cognizant their loved ones could head to Afghanistan
El Paso, Texas (CNN) -- Since 1848, Fort Bliss has been where U.S. soldiers toil, train and sweat under the strong Southwest sun before departing for battlegrounds around the world.
It has also been where their loved ones grieve upon hearing the worst possible news from the war front -- including in 52 cases over eight years of fighting in Iraq.
Such heart-wrenching returns from that Middle Eastern nation will soon become history. President Barack Obama announced Friday that the vast majority of the more than 39,000 U.S. troops now stationed in Iraq, including about 3,500 from Fort Bliss, "will definitely be home for the holidays."
The decision set off shrieks and tears of joy among family members of the deployed troops.
"Everybody was yelling and screaming and clapping and crying," recalled Denise Young, whose husband, John, deployed in July. "It was very emotional."
Extreme highs and lows are nothing new for military spouses like Young, who is the daughter of a 28-year Marine. Her husband -- a medic for the 4th Brigade of the 1st Armored Division, which is based at Fort Bliss -- has been in the military for five years.
Young said there are plenty of headaches and heartache for her and the couple's children every time her husband sets off for such countries as Iraq and Afghanistan. Some of it stems from suddenly becoming a single parent, and then there's the looming nightmare of possibly never seeing her husband alive again.
"It's always a worry," Young said. "You just have to take it one day at a time."
Like Young, Brooke Trapnell expected the day she could finally breathe -- when her husband, Tyrone, was finally back in her arms -- would come in July. That would have marked 12 months after the husband was first deployed to Iraq.
Trapnell said the separation has been difficult. The rest of her family is 2,000 miles away in Pennsylvania, and she found herself forced to become "the man and the woman of the house" when problems, like a broken toilet, arose.
She believes Obama's decision is the right one. The decision came after talks with the Iraqis about extending the U.S. troop presence broke down over the key issue of legal immunity for American military personnel. The campaign has claimed more than 4,400 American lives and has cost upwards of $700 billion, according to the Department of Defense.
"It's been too long," Trapnell said.
Morgan Herrera doesn't think her husband, Leonardo, should return to Iraq, either. He is a petroleum specialist who deployed for the first time in August, less than a month after arriving at Fort Bliss, which covers roughly 1.1 million acres of land in southern Texas and New Mexico.
"It's been eight years, so I feel like it's about time," she said of the Iraq war.
Herrera added she is "ecstatic" that her husband should be home in time to celebrate his 21st birthday, and she is eager to cook him his favorite meal of pork chops.
But she and other Fort Bliss families know, too, that while their loved ones may not head back to Iraq, that does not mean they won't face more danger.
While thousands of personnel from the army base are now in Iraq, more -- about 5,000 -- are in Afghanistan.
Even as her mind races at "a million miles an hour" in anticipation of her husband's imminent return, Young said she's trying not to lose the perspective that comes with life as a military spouse.
"It's the army," Young said. "You don't know what tomorrow is going to hold. You just do the best you can."
Trapnell said that she's heard some Fort Bliss troops might go from Iraq to Kuwait and eventually end up in Afghanistan. But she said that, for now, she is trying to enjoy the fact that her husband will be home, and cannot bring herself to consider yet that he may be in harm's way again, this time in Afghanistan.
"That's not an option in my mind," she said.

Conrad Murray's trial resumes after five-day break

Los Angeles (CNN) -- The trial of Conrad Murray resumed Wednesday with an anesthesiology expert who is likely to be the last witness before the prosecution rests its direct case.

Murray is on trial for involuntary manslaughter in the 2009 death of pop icon Michael Jackson.

He has pleaded not guilty.

Dr. Steven Shafer's testimony was delayed Wednesday morning while Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor viewed a 18-minute video that the prosecution wanted to show demonstrating how the surgical anesthetic propofol is administered in a hospital setting.

Judge Pastor ruled much of it could be shown in court, including a demonstration of what happens when a patient experiences cardiac arrest while under propofol.

"It's a terrifying dramatization of a person experiencing cardiac arrest, complete with visual effects," defense lawyer Ed Chernoff said in his argument against letting jurors see it.

Deputy District Attorney David Walgren spent an extended mid-morning break re-editing the video to delete scenes not accepted by the judge, including with an anesthesiologist meeting a patient and getting a signed informed consent statement. Judge Pastor ruled that irrelevant in this case.

Dr. Shafer's testimony was suspended last Thursday to enable his lawyers to study a new lab test and allow the prosecution's anesthesiology expert, Steven Shafer, to attend a medical convention. It was delayed again after a death in the expert's family.

The judge indicated if Shafer's testimony is completed Wednesday, court would recess the following day to allow the defense to prepare before presenting its case Friday.

Prosecutors are nearing a conclusion to their direct presentation, but rebuttal witnesses could be called next week after the defense rests its case.

Prosecutors allege that Murray, who was Jackson's personal doctor as he prepared for planned comeback concerts, is criminally responsible for the singer's death because of medical negligence and his reckless use of the surgical anesthetic propofol to help him sleep.

Murray faces a maximum sentence of four years if convicted of involuntary manslaughter, but a new California law could mean the doctor would never see the inside of a state prison cell.

The law, intended to reduce state prison overcrowding, provides for most nonviolent offenders with no prior record to be kept in county jails.

A four-year sentence could become two years if Murray is ordered to serve his time in the Los Angeles County jail, according to sheriff's spokeswoman Nicole Nishida.

In addition, the Los Angeles jail is under court order to reduce overcrowding, which means many nonviolent first time offenders are allowed to serve the bulk of their time under supervised house arrest.

A conviction, however, would likely trigger the revocation of Murray's medical licenses in California, Texas and Nevada.

The trial, in its fourth week, is still expected to conclude with the start of jury deliberations next week.

Shafer is crucial to the state's effort to prove Jackson's death was caused by the doctor's gross negligence in using propofol to help the entertainer sleep.

Rooney handed three-game ban after red card

(CNN) -- England striker Wayne Rooney will miss the group stages of Euro 2012 after being banned for three games Thursday for his red card against Montenegro in their final qualifying game.

Rooney was sent off in the 2-2 draw in Podgorica last Friday when he kicked out at Miodrag Dzudovic in the 74th minute.

"The UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body has today handed down a three-match suspension to England forward Wayne Rooney following his dismissal during the UEFA Euro 2012 qualifier in Montenegro last Friday," said a statement by European football's governing body.

The English Football Association (FA) is yet to decide whether or not to appeal.

"Further to UEFA's decision to impose a three match suspension on Wayne Rooney following his sending off against Montenegro, The FA await the full reasons from the disciplinary committee, and will give full consideration to the decision internally, before deciding on any response to UEFA or making any further public comment," the statement said.

The loss of Manchester United's Rooney is a severe blow to England's chances of reaching the knockout rounds in Poland and Ukraine next year.

They had been hopeful that UEFA might show leniency to the 25-year-old and hand him a one-game ban after referee Wolfgang Stark admitted Rooney's acceptance of his red card could work to his advantage.

But UEFA has ruled otherwise, calling the incident an "assault" which carries the three-game penalty.

Rooney, who has 73 caps, will be left to rue what England coach Fabio Capello called a "silly mistake."

Capello has also indicated that Rooney might not make it back into the fold after serving his suspension.

"Yes," replied Capello, when asked if he was prepared to leave Rooney out of his team.

"In my life as a manager I have put on the bench a lot of players. I always decided who was the best player at that moment."

Capello also said he would leave Rooney out of preparation friendly matches as he tries to find the best lineup without his talisman.
